If you could work on any brand or client in the world, which would it be and why?

Gü would be my dream brand to design for. First of all I have a massive sweet tooth and these puddings are amazing, therefore this brand is perfect for me as I am their ideal customer (and hopefully I would get lots of free samples).
Not only this, but they brought my attention to Big Fish, which has been a massive stepping stone into my design career, and has helped me focus on how my assets can be used within the packaging industry. It was the design that first caught my eye, as I love how the box looks so mysterious & dreamy. I then went on to look at the brand in more depth, which led me to discovering yourselves & also to find my strong agreement with their brand values & beliefs on life. The belief that ‘Ordinary is pointless’ is one of the attitudes I love, as I also take this perspective on life as I always make adventurous and unique decisions to make my work distinctive.

Why do you want to work at Big Fish®?

I love the aesthetic of your work. You go above and beyond your average branding and packaging. You make your work unique by testing out hand-rendered activities and adding them to your work digitally and I feel I would fit in perfectly as I like to get my hands dirty. Another reason why I would like to work at Big Fish is due to the way in which you only work for clients who adhere to your personal beliefs as a company, and only work on products that the team could be a possible target audience for.

Are you…

currently studying on a degree course?

Contact Studios Two

After I didn't get any replied from my first lot of emails I sent I thought I would try again to different studios since it has been just under a month now since my last batch.

PARAGON CREATIVE

Hello,
I am a third year graphic design student at Leeds College of Art, and I have recently come across your studio and love the work you do! One of my favourites is the Royal London Hospital 7th Floor project. I love the brief as a whole, due to the cause and to make the experience of the hospital more exciting rather than frightening. But I also love how you have included textures and lights so all children can enjoy the experience even if they are not able bodied.
So why am I contacting you?
I am wondering if you hold placements within your company preferably at your Leeds branch, as I would love the chance to be able to learn and develop my skills by working at the side of your experienced team.
I have attached my Porfolio & CV within the email so you can look at some of my work and to see if I could possibly become a part of your team for a week or two, or maybe longer? Although, my practice focused within my portfolio is branding & packaging, I have a huge interest in 3D installations, which I haven’t had the chance to be apart of yet, and I would love the opportunity to pursue this further.

Best Wishes,
Melissa Gater.

ELEMENTAL DESIGN

Hello,
A while back now I fell in love with the Victor&Rolf Flowerbomb launch display, and this instantly became a massive stepping-stone within my design career. This helped made me realise that retail visuals & 3D design would be the sector for me, as I love to get my hands dirty and work within a large space. Which obviously led me to yourselves and your other 3D work, I love your recent Ted Baker window installation for Valentines. This subtle connotation to Valentines appeals more to myself as it’s not just the typical expectation, the use of the motion of the viewer to enhance the experience is also something that interest me, as it will make the work more memorable for the viewer.
The focus within my portfolio (which is attached to the email) is currently branding & packaging, although I have a huge interest within 3D installations & would love to work within the retail sector. The main application of packaging within my portfolio is due to the restriction of scale within my course, so therefore I enjoy packaging, but I long to create on a larger scale with more resistant materials!
So who am I? I am a third year graphic design student at Leeds College of Art. Who wants a to work within your company! I thought I would contact you to see if you hold placements within your design company, as I believe this would be extremely beneficial to myself and my practice. I have also attached my creative CV to show you my non-design retail experience.
Best Wishes,
Melissa Gater.

STUDIOXAG

Hello,
I am third year graphic design student at Leeds College of Art, and have a huge interest in 3D design especially retail installations. The Lotte World Mall is one of my favourite projects that you have recently completed. I like how you have thought about the visuals from all view points, for example on the hanging castle on clouds you have designed it so there is a castle on both sides of the clouds and therefore both levels can engage with the design. Although, I also love all the work you have created for Christian Louboutin as these are the dream shoes every girl wants.
So why am I contacting you? I am wondering if you hold placements within your company, as I would love the chance to be able to learn and develop my skills by working at the side of your experienced team.
I have attached my portfolio that currently presents my practice to be mainly focused around branding & packaging. Although, I have a huge interest within 3D installations, but haven’t had the chance to be able to create something on such a large scale. The main application of packaging within my portfolio is the 3D reflection of my working style, this is due to the restriction of scale, so therefore I enjoy packaging, but I long to create on a larger scale with more resistant materials!
Best Wishes,
Melissa Gater.

93FT

Hello,

I have been looking into various studios for a while now and yours has massively stood out to myself. Due to the close focus on the aspects I love within design.
So who am I? I am a third year graphic design student at Leeds College of art, who has a keen interest in branding, packaging & 3D design. And is wondering if I could come and meet the team and possibly chat about my portfolio, which is attached, maybe even talk about reality of studio life etc…
What I like about your studio? I especially love your Silversmiths project, I love how you have worked with all avenues from branding to interior. I think this creates a really strong conceptual brand. My favourite piece within the overview of this project is the gift card, this has been throughly thought through as this is not your typical gift card. I also love the luxury look with the tactile aesthetics to give a sensory experience.

I will look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,
Melissa Gater.

TURNKEY

Hello,

I have been looking into various studios for a while now and yours has massively stood out to myself.I have been looking into various studios for a while now and yours has massively stood out to myself. I would love the chance to come visit your studio in real working order rather than me trying to relive the experience through twitter.

And is wondering if I could come and meet the team and possibly chat about my portfolio, which is attached, maybe even talk about reality of studio life etc… Because as it says on the wall in the go food project, “the best things in life are meant to be shared!”
What I like about your studio? I love how you are very hands on, and use lots of tactile elements to enhance the style of the design. I especially love I especially love the go food project, the idea of using different mediums is something I strongly believe in too.

I will look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,

DMSQD

Hello,
I have recently come across your studio from a post I found online which explained that the prestigious New York Club chose you to design their invitations for their dinner event. I love the use of the textured black stock & copper foil, as it connotes a luxury and tactile feel, in which really drives my style of design.
So who am I? I am a third year graphic design student at Leeds College of art, who has a keen interest in branding, packaging. And is wondering if I could come and meet the team and possibly chat about my portfolio, which is attached, maybe even talk about reality of studio life etc…
What I like about your studio? I love that you explain the process of working with a client as a journey, through directing, listening and partnering. I also love the use of the different media used within your design, whether this being within your typography or as a substitute for the stock eg. enlightened invitations.

I will look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,
Melissa Gater.

MYSTERY

Hello,

I have been searching for the perfect studio for me of sometime now, and I have final come across yourselves. The ability to be able to do all the things I love within one studio seems perfect to me. I love getting the audience interacting with my design and this is just what this studio does throughout all aspects of work.

So who am I? I am a third year graphic design student at Leeds College of art, who has a keen interest in branding, packaging & 3D design. And is wondering if I could come and be a part of the team, and be able to see the studio in real working order rather than me trying to relive the experience from hearsay.

What I am hoping to achieve from Mystery? I think that mystery is the perfect agency for me. You fill all the sectors within the industry that found very difficult to find. I want to learn how to create that strong connection with clients, as I believe this is something you do effectively with your methodology of Brand Facets.

What I love about your studio? I love the fun & cozy feel of the Firehouse project. The rustic feel is accompanied with the bright & adventurous style. Plus, with the little added touches of love through the cuckoo cock and the interactive elements throughout the restaurant.

Looks like you will have to put the kettle on!

Kind Regards,
Melissa Gater.

TIGERPRINT

Hello,
I know you probably get lots of emails every day for placements around this time of year so I am going to cut straight to the point. I am a third year graphic design student at Leeds College of Art and have longed to work at Tigerprint since the realm of the design world was opened to me.
Why I want a placement at Tigerprint?
I love the variety of work that you can do and the moto that everything Is possible. The ability to practice old & new skills is an attraction to me also, as I love learning new things. I believe that been ordinary is pointless, I am always looking for new ways to do things, which seems to be a valued perception within the studio too. I believe I will be a friendly face within the studio & I want to be a tigerprinter!
Attached is my Portfolio & CV as requested, hope I can cut the mustard!
I still didn't receive a reply from any of the studios... But someone has mentioned that if there is any files over 10MB the file will automatically go into to the trash and therefore this may be the case as my portfolio is quite a large file....

Brand On Shelf Visit

Today, I went to Brand on Shelf is based to meet Torben the creative director at the Leeds branch. Unfortunately he came down to meet me at the reception and he took us out for a coffee. He did mention that if the meeting room was being used he would have to take me out somewhere as the current studio was very small.

We went to Malmaissons which is just down the road from where they are based. We then sat down and had a short chat about what we had done today and how the day was planning out. He made me feel very relaxed so therefore I felt more at ease when explaining my portfolio.

This is the portfolio I took:

After I had presented my work to him, he mentioned that I have a very feminine style and therefore he would like me to maybe brand something for men or something with a totally different aesthetic.

He gave me a little advise for when I am presenting to create a story behind the brand.... Tell a story so that the concept is about the background of the brand. "gurjits canaries"

If you are rebranding something put a before & after this is always interesting!

Place it institue - In Mrs Smith's fridge.

He said he would like to meet me again in around 2-3 months & he would like an invite to my end of year show.

He said he would keep me in mind for any placement opportunities as he is not yet in a position to be able to accept placements as their studio is too small.

With my multisensory cinema he told me I should take it to the cinema & photograph the box on the seat. Explain how they would know what they would be finding in the dark...

He then told me an interesting task to complete when designing something - if you was to send a little boy in a supermarket to go get a product. How would you explain it? Therefore you need to make sure it stands out from the rest on the shelf. Not just for the method of little ones going shopping but its a basis if a little boy can find it its going to be interesting.

He went through my portfolio one by one:

Tea:
Whats the story behind the logo?
Whats different about yours?
Tips of the leafs only?
Title a pic close up!

Multisensory Cinema:
How do you know which one you are getting in the dark?
Photograph box on a cinema seat?

Sweetshop:
110 years why? - Is there 100 years within design?
Handcrafted - like the sweets they make?
Before & after logo, what have you done?

Christmas Cards area nice touch but take out!

Attention to detail:
All double page spreads
How to books
Different from print.

Wedding:
Does it bring anything?
Barn wedding, lace & neutral theme?

Masculine
Builders Tea
Nice Box
Something with diversity.

You can tell you have a good eye for design, but you are not showing various skills. Maybe create an editorial page?

Unfortunately I didn't get to see the studio, but this maybe something that I can ask for next time.

Manifesto PPP Presentation

Today we presented our second presentation of the year. This is the presentation to see where we are now and what has changed since the start of the year.

This is my presentation from today.....

Heres my notes that I made to follow while presenting:

I have chnaged my self branding - reflects me more as a person it has the same aesthetic but suits me more as a designer.

Not changed much - addition of installations into my manifesto although haven't done any ahile at uni I finding my self more inspired by them more & more.

COP3 - This has not changed me as a designer - just made me reflect more on how to get the audience involved more effectively.

Briefs completed:
Tea - strongest project so far - although I am going to re make them with the laser for a clean edge on the diecut.
Christmas Cards - fun & interactive.
Dr.me - mix media, enhanced digitally. Working with Adam was interesting.
TDR - pointless task, realise how much you can get done in one hour.
DSM - liked the challenge & using infographics which I have never done before.

Only brief I have changed is my Perfume Packaging & Instore Promotion as I am going to to change this to the YCN whistles due to it having similar outcomes, this will also give me something to put in my portfolio thats of an existing brand.

Contacted many studio - only one got back to me...

Events really enjoyed:
Design Manchester - this was perfect for my COP.
Behance Portfolio Review - good to see where we are compared to other students from different unis.
